A woman’s best protection is a little money of her own.
-Clare Boothe Luce
Women form that inevitable part of our society, which still is struggling for independence in its real sense. Although we have come a long way, certain practices refrain women from getting a basic education and making a career for themselves. The opportunity of getting educated is snatched away from many young girls. They drop out of school as soon as they start menstruating. As per The Times of India, nearly 5.12 lakh adolescent girls lose the chance of getting educated. In many households, women are still not allowed to go for professional work after getting married. Such practices make them rely on the other family members for financial needs, which sometimes prove fatal for them.
A financially independent woman not only becomes a supportive pillar for the family but also inspires other women to pursue the same. In today's world, where prices of even the essential commodities are touching the skies every other day, having one more earning member in the family can lighten the burden from other family members' shoulders.
Apart from this, in unfortunate situations of harassment and abuse in the family, one of the reasons women don't really take a stand for themselves is because they wholly rely on the other family members for their basic necessities of food, clothes and shelter. Financial independence can somehow support women to help themselves out of such drastic situations.
Although education and degrees can help one get a job and earn their financial independence, having the correct skill sets without any educational qualification can also make one gain the finances for themselves. In this era, there are several ways by which a person can build their professional life. Women who have access to technology can build a brand of their own by creating educational or promotional content. They can also create an e-commerce website or can run a business through existing sites. The government has also increased opportunities with initiatives such as Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana, Mahila e-Haat, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, etc. to empower women. Several governmental and non-governmental organizations are actively helping women from the marginalized sector by creating job opportunities and protecting their earnings from being clutched into the hands of the ostensible people in their lives.
The only things one needs today to make oneself financially independent are intention and a strong determination. Our world today is filled with opportunities. Women just need to decide and grab the chance with all their strength and create a financially independent life.
